The Cubbies' Anthony Rizzo is definitely in favor. How about you? Is 162 game too many? BTW, Rizzo even says he'd take a pay cut to do it!
"I think we play too much baseball," Rizzo said Tuesday during his weekly appearance on ESPN 1000. "Yes, guys are going to take pay cuts. But are we playing this game for the money or do we love this game? I know it's both, but in the long run it will make everything better."
Rizzo believes a transition period with guaranteed contracts could be worked out, perhaps "grandfathering" them into a new system with new contracts reflecting fewer games played...
"I think playing in the cold sucks," Rizzo said. "I was thinking about this the other day. When you think of Cubs and Cardinals, you think of a beautiful Saturday at Wrigley Field. You don't think about playing in 20 degrees."

That would be something for single season records if they reduced the number of games.

(36,463 posts)If they want to shorten the season for better weather, SCHEDULE more double headers. Simple, no? BRING BACK DOUBLE HEADERS!

(36,463 posts)The one single doubleheader I saw scheduled this season was a split doubleheader; the fans are chased out of the park between games and need a second ticket to re-enter.

(16,113 posts)warmer weather climates and domed stadiums. They could also start the season a little later and make up for it by scheduling more doubleheaders like they used to (as Buzz said).

(65,168 posts)There are 10 teams playing in SoCal, Texas, Florida, or with a dome plus Arizona. Add Atlanta to that mix (pretty far south) and you have 11 team, which means 22 teams could be playing in good weather for the first 4 weeks of the season. The 8 teams left at first would be those that cycle in, so nobody would have to play more than one or two seried in cold weather locations.

I don't because it's inherently flawed

(32,088 posts)It's ridiculous that the World Series ends in November. And, they're back at it four months later in spring training? Way too much.
I dare say the NHL needs to cut back, as well. They start in October, and the Cup gets decided in JUNE??? I don't expect them to change as long as they have that scumbag as their commissioner, however.

(17,321 posts)Gary Bettman must be one of the most reviled commissioners in professional sports history, at least by the fans. And yet he's been around a looooong time. The league must be making good money under his tenure.

(10,893 posts)reducing the number of games, what I'd like to see are less divisional games and more games outside of the division. It should be similar to the NBA, where all 30 teams get to play at least one home and road series against other teams outside their divisions. There are 162 games, so they should be able to find a way to make that work. As an A's fan, it gets boring to see them play the Angels, Astros, Mariners, and Rangers all the time. They have to play each team 19 times!
