Dwight Clark, Joe Montana 'The Catch' statue unveiled at Levi's Stadium

The 49ers on Sunday morning unveiled a statue of Joe Montana and Dwight Clark to commemorate “The Catch,” the famous touchdown pass in the 1982 NFC Championship Game that sent the 49ers to their first Super Bowl.

The entire sculpture is a two-part piece that features Joe Montana with his arms raised in celebration on one ened. 23 yards away is a leaping Dwight Clark, reeling in a football with his fingertips. It’s complete with a diagram of the play and Clark’s signature inscribed on a glass backing that holds up the ‘catch’ side of the statue.

Clark succumbed to ALS in June. His family was on hand along with a slew of 49ers alumni for a private ceremony Sunday morning prior to the 49ers’ game against the Rams.

Dwight Clark's buddy, Huey Lewis, immortalized "The Catch" on his album, Sports, thirty-five years ago.

The injuries have just killed them. At least they should get a good draft pick.
