1. My guess is his obsession with golf courses is he was turned down by some well established clubs

when he was a young suck with money. Tuxedo Park, Maidstone, National and Shinnecock in Southampton, etc. He built his own courses and clubs for spite.

He was denied membership in the most exclusive club in Palm Beach, so he built Maralago and would throw big parties with celebrities and a lot of publicity.
Everything he does is out of spite or for reasons that further bloat his ego.
