Andrew Luck has been the target of plenty of unfair criticism since he made the shocking decision to retire from football over the weekend, but one of the most absurd takes came from Doug Gottlieb. Troy Aikman, who works for the same company as Gottlieb, had no problem unloading on the former college basketball player.
Aikman, of course, is the lead analyst for NFL games on FOX. Gottlieb hosts a show on FOX Sports Radio and appears on FOX Sports 1. Aikman blasted Gottlieb and even took a shot at FS1 while he was at it.
Thats total bulls Doug, Aikman wrote on Twitter. What qualifies you to decide how someone should live their life? So youre now the authority on what motivates Andrew Luck? And if his decisions dont fit into what you think is best for him then you rip him? Guess that keeps you employed on FS1. Nice.

The way Colts fans treated Luck as he walked off the field on Saturday was bad, but Gottliebs tweet was worse. Of course, as Aikman mentioned, its the type of hot take that keeps someone like Gottlieb employed. The more attention it gets, the better even if that attention is almost exclusively negative.

Personally I find Aikman and Joe Buck to be two of the most annoying announcers but he's spot on in this case.

(12,265 posts)Luck has a right to protect his health. This guy has taken a serious beating and I am sure now that he is going to be a parent it terrifies him that he won't be able to even play with his child due to playing in the NFL. He is a very smart guy, has a degree in Architecture from a top school, he doesn't need to have his brains beat out every Sunday for an extended period of time.
I love football, but I also know how dangerous it is and support a player who wants to walk away before they are totally messed up.

Oh,and he has had more than twenty major Surgeries on his hips, legs and Knees. He just said he flunked his CTE exam this time around. And he knew when it was time to get out, unfortunately,a few years later, then all hell broke loose in his body.

He's entitled to prioritize his long term health over football.
It's sad how many of us buy into the notion that ANYONE who tries to remove themselves from a painful physical or financial situation (that really only benefits the owners) needs to suck it up.
Doug Gottlieb is a fool.

(9,664 posts)Right up there with Kanye or that Simon dude on America's Got Too Much Inanity TV. He might be a nice guy and knowledgeable in a lot of areas, but he comes across as smug and self centered and his screen presence is channel-changing worthy, IMO. I hope he doesn't rub off too much on his booth mate Aikman.

(11,302 posts)but -- "talk radio" -- do you have to say any more than that?
Which is really kind of a shame because if you actually spend some time with top level players, there's some pretty sharp people represented. The guys wearing the pads are mostly NOT meatheads. Pure love of the game has kept many going -- clearly longer than they should. It's interesting that Luck made a point of saying that the love was essentially gone. As much as his health .. the game ground down his love for it. That's pretty sad -- and honest. I hope more guys make decisions that are right for them in the future.
