Car owner Richard Petty 'enraged' by noose in driver Bubba Wallace's garage

Team owner and legendary driver Richard Petty said Monday that he was “enraged” by a noose being put in his team’s garage stall ahead of Sunday’s race at Talladega.

Bubba Wallace, the only Black driver racing full-time in NASCAR, drives Petty’s famed No. 43 in the Cup Series. Petty is set to be in attendance at Monday’s rain-delayed Talladega race in support of Wallace. Petty, 82, has not attended a NASCAR race since the series began racing again during the coronavirus pandemic in May.

“I’m enraged by the act of someone placing a noose in the garage stall of my race team,” Petty said in a statement. “There is absolutely no place in our sport or our society for racism. This filthy act serves as a reminder of how far we still have to go to eradicate racial prejudice and it galvanizes my resolve to use the resources of Richard Petty Motorsports to create change. The sick person who perpetrated this act must be found, exposed and swiftly and immediately expelled from NASCAR. I believe in my heart this despicable act is not representative of the competitors I see each day in the NASCAR garage area. I stand shoulder to shoulder with Bubba, yesterday, today, tomorrow and every day forward.”

NASCAR, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama are investigating the placement of the noose. It was discovered by a team member before the race was set to begin at 3 p.m. ET. Thunderstorms pushed the race to Monday.

I guess I had stereotyped Petty. Given his politics and just about everyone I’ve ever met like him I figured....I figured wrong.

All his life he has been in NASCAR where the flag is flown and a vast majority of the fans are racists. Petty was not always outraged at racism before:

Is my third cousin.

Glad he's coming to stand with Bubba. He is liberal.
Alot of folks on both sides of my family are liberals. One of the last pictures I took of my grandma she's standing in front of her house in her Clinton shirt laughing holding up a democratic bumper sticker. In one hand the other on her heart..It's easy to equate the south with stupid magats ,but there are big liberal families in there too.

My aunt Helen was tilted right. She seemed stuck like that. Two things made her become a liberal. Once she said alot of horseshit about hating transgender people. I told her I am transgendered. She didn't know I had surgery. I opened my shirt and showed her my male chest. She was stunned into silence. She and I had a long talk about it and she supported me in the end. She accepted it. Called me Panther after that. The other thing was she found out her old church was racist,as they shunned a black family. She saw how it hurt them. Chewed out the pastor in front of everyone. That church lost a big chunk of thier congragation that day and she switched churches to one that accepted everybody.

So righties can change if they are brave enough and honest enough about it to do it.

My aunt Loretta is a
full blown chritian magat and I don't know if she will go beyond it. One can wish but I'm not holding my breath.

Danville, VA is not far from Randleman, NC. Petty is famously frugal, and used to "rib" his friend "How come we spend so much money, and you run so good?"
Richard has been adamant, for decades, that Wendell Scott was the Jackie Robinson of NASCAR, and that it was time for more drivers as good as him.
