SF Giants' Buster Posey opts out of 2020 season

San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey announced Friday morning he's opting out of Major League Baseball's truncated 2020 season.

Posey said he and his wife Kristin are adopting twin girls and the adoption was made official on Thursday.

"A week ago, identical twin girls were born that my wife and I are adopting," he said at a Friday press conference. "My wife, myself and our older children are overwhelmed with joy ... to share life with them. Since I knew this adoption was on the table, I've decided to opt out of the 2020 season. We feel this is the best decision for our babies."

Posey missed his third workout at Giants camp Thursday as he mulled over his decision with his family. Posey has two other young children (also twins) and has implied he might skip this season on multiple occasions.

I bet his mind was made up weeks ago. He knows it's a bad idea. I support Posey all the way.

I don't blame them one bit.

Everything is a grand experiment.

It will be interesting to see what the other sports do when their stars opt out..

There are a lot of players who are less secure (both financially and their position on a team) who will feel like they don't have a choice.

It was the right decision, but Buster's commitment to the game made it a tough one; it helped that his team totally supported Posey all the way.

Hunter Pence knew Posey was struggling with the decision in training camp, but I understand he made the final decision just days ago.
