Do you believe The Star-Spangled Banner should be played at American sporting events?

A question from San Francisco Chronicle sports columnist Bruce Jenkins.

rather than accepting the critique and correcting your own poll, you opted to become defensive.

It is nationalistic b.s. I find it extremely offensive that they trot out some active duty soldier that we all must stand up and clap for. If the MLB, NFL, etc., care so much about the active duty folks, why aren’t they on the front lines helping vets? Additionally, this was all set in motion by the military, with our tax dollars. Meh.

trotted out 4 sets of parents who had lost sons in Iraq. We all respect the military but why does this have to be showcased at all these sporting events? I lost a brother to Vietnam and I would not have wanted my parents to be put on display at a football game.

But, it seems ridiculous to me that it’s okayed at baseball, football, hockey, basketball etc games. I’ve never understood it. Further, my kiddo is a baseball player and when he was younger and played Little League, the pledge those kids have to say bugged me too...”I trust in god, I love my country...”

understood why they do this. Do other countries play their national anthem before sporting events? I can understand playing it when they have a veterans event or 4th of July or Veterans Day.
