For the second time since NASCAR banned displays of the Confederate battle flag last month, one was flown over the site of a Cup Series race.
On Wednesday, the flag was towed by an airplane over NASCARs All-Star race in Bristol, Tenn., after previously being spotted above a race in June at Alabamas Talladega Superspeedway. Whereas the banner to which the flag was affixed last month also bore the message Defund NASCAR, this time it included a website URL related to a group called Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV).
The commander in chief of the Tennessee-based group, Paul C. Gramling Jr., did not immediately respond Wednesday to a request for comment. In remarks last month to the Columbia Daily Herald, Gramling said, It is the hope of the Sons of Confederate Veterans that NASCAR fans will be allowed the fundamental American right of displaying pride in their family and heritage.
We believe NASCARs slandering of our Southern heritage only further divides our nation."
NASCAR did not provide official comment on the SCVs action in June, but Steve ODonnell, the stock-car racing organizations executive vice president and chief racing development officer, called the perpetrator of the stunt a jackass at the time in a tweet.

(9,983 posts)NASCAR has been exiling overt racists from their "sphere of influence" for DECADES. I've NEVER seen a confederate flag, or similar "icon", for sale at any of the myriad souvenir or "apparel" vendors at any track in my experience.

(9,983 posts)And not a fan of Big Bill France, in particular regard to his actions to Wendell Scott, or the track at Talladega, AL. It should be noted that LeeRoy Yarborough punched France in the mouth at the drivers meeting for the inital race there
But should you condemm a sport enjoyed by millions, for the acts of a few? Or do you have some other stereotypes to bring out?

I get you like it, with your user name, but its a sport that has pandered to racists for decades. I know there are exceptions, like you, but still. . . . . . .

(9,983 posts)Blantantly patronizing........ At the top levels, the sponsors are buying advertising. The Clinton and Obama campaigns chose to not lay out $50K/ race, is all. Using a sponsorship well requires coordinated exploitation, it's not NASCAR's choice to not engage that audience, but the campaign's.
