Gave up my favorite sports message board today

I'm a huge sports fan. College football, NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA. I love the changing seasons and the sports they bring. During the pandemic, I have intentionally avoided going onto my favorite sports message board, mainly because boards like that are overpopulated with RW nutters.

This particular board was originally built for all things sports related to a university we support in the south, but the board offers message boards for the full spectrum of sports. I went there this morning before work and I was so appalled and disgusted by the vast majority of the posts that I deleted my account.

I'm used to the rw bent to many who follow sports, especially in the south, but these posts were so extreme I could no longer support the site with my membership. For example: people who are concerned about COVID-19 and college football are "spineless", "gaslighting America", "only promoting this to undermine Trump" over a virus that is "no worse than a sinus infection".

🤦🏻?♂️...that wasn't just one post. It was post after post after post...for my own sanity I left. Makes me a bit sad because I do enjoy the sports banter but this is just too much. I refuse to tolerate this crap in an area of my life that I use to escape from the crap we're dealing with in this country.

Trump is so polarized that you either like or dislike him and the two sides are living in different worlds. And somehow, he is inserted in everything in daily life now, in sports, in games, and any other conversations that used to not be politicized. I used to respect republicans but I can never respect a Trump-republican. The lies and distractions Trump throws out and the way they all ate it up is cult like.

I have problems with democrats and republicans alike. No one is perfect. But somehow, for them, Trump is God and he can do no wrong. Any criticism against him is unreasonable and should be taken down for them. And you can't have a serious conversation or debate with them.

They fully expect and demand that young athletes, with their whole lives and careers ahead of them, throw themselves on the COVID fire for their personal entertainment. These young people are supposed to risk their future health, destroy their internal organs and roll the dice with heart disease that will haunt them into their lives, should they survive.

This is the "conservative" base. These are trump's angry white hordes. He is the perfect reflection of them. ME ME ME ME ME.

I will miss football this year. I live for those sixteen NFL games. It is my favorite time of year, but I don't think ANYONE should play sports this year. It's not worth it. Colleges are making the absolutely right choice and I hope that Professional football can see past the loss of DOLLARS to take their players health into consideration too.

It’s immoral to subject these young athletes to the possibility of lifelong health consequences from corona virus, so that they can watch football on the weekend.

I can’t even believe this is being discussed.

Until 2016 I could have discussions with fellow team fans or fans of opposing teams in friendly ways, just like other part of life. I figured their politics were different than mine but didn't let it intrude into sports. Now the hating trumper humpers have to facisticly inject their poison into every aspect of life, including sports. Really has taken the joy out of it in many ways, except for the enjoyment I get from watching players of both sexes excel and when they take joy in their accomplishments.

It totally depends upon the sport, the team, and the league per sports message boards and politics. I'm a huge NBA fan and my team is in a blue city in a purple state. Both forums I belong to for this team haven't a single Republican, just various degrees of Democrats and sundry liberals, from centrists to far-out leftists who may or may not vote Biden. The local NFL team's forums, are evenly populated by Democrats and Trump supporters, and the battles are non-stop.

I hang out at a far-out leftist board but most of us would fit in with Denmark or Uruguay. More than a few aren't so pro gun control so Ecuador was a common country for them.

This was the test we took.

Pre-COVID, I'd have conversations through work or neighborhood gatherings and within five minutes they'd have to bring up Trump or dastardly libs. Out of thin air!! Consumed I say. Geesh, can we just talk about something else??

The owners actually sent me an email asking me to come back, that they'd cleaned the place up, got rid of the assholes.

And they did, to their credit. And I went back.

But it didn't last. That's just the way those places are. I missed it for a while 'til I didn't.

And now I don't think about them at all.

In fact, the whole time I was typing this I was trying to remember the name of the place. Finally remembered, but I'm not gonna give 'em any love.

First it was Covidiots then it was BLM. Some even wanted to cut Murray for saying he will kneel this season.

It actually isn't difficult to debate the right wingers, what scares me is when similar arguments pop up here.
