45 years to score an ace

I've been golfing on and off for 45 years. Today, I finally achieved that elusive ace. 187 yard par 3 with a bit of wind help. Hit the edge of the hole, hitting the stick and staying in the shallow (covid) hole. Also shot an 87 on an par 73 course which for me is a bit good, not the best ever but pretty good. The drinks have been good.

Nice round, too. I'm a 14-handicap so we should play a round together sometime.

If you don't mind, which club did you use? I hope you've retired your ball for posterity.

I got my ace about ten years ago. It was a cold early April day late in the afternoon. The hole was a par-3, 126 yards with a green tilted severely from back to front with large sand bunkers to the left and the right. The wind was in our faces as was the sun. I was hitting last and my playing partners all left their shots short of the green so I re-clubbed to my 7-iron. Because of the sun, I couldn't see where my shot went and since I felt I had hit it a bit thin, I assumed it airmailed the green. As I was looking behind the green, one of the guys said, "Hey, schmuck. You're buying." Of course, all three of those guys wanted single malts costing me what was my weekly salary in my first job!

Congratulations!

Callaway supersoft ball. 5th hole Eagle Creek.
Good thing it hit the cup or it'd been off the back of the green.

We took lessons together when he realized that volleyball and other team sports were not happening.
We had never played and glad we started with lessons.
We have gotten better.
We do not keep score. Met some guys on our favorite course who said they scored with whoever loses the least balls wins.
If we make a great score on a hole we announce it.

He used to walk, knee replacement stopped that.

A hole in one is an elusive goal. Congratulations.

Also, if it feels like a country club, we avoid it. We like public courses with real people playing.

I've thought about private clubs. The problem being that the people I play with wouldn't be members so then what would I do. You might be surprised how "bad" the members at most clubs are. You'd probably "fit" right in.

Always bringing it up in meetings. One day a new employee started, and he began to tell his story during her introductory meeting to the team. He said "I remember when I made a hole in one ..." and the lady leaned forward in her chair and said "Was it at the windmill? I *love* that hole!" and years later she still never pays for a drink when the coworkers go out for drinks.

(I don't mean to belittle your accomplishment! What every golfer dreams of!)

I think my dad did one, but on one of those tiny nine hole pitch-n-putts, not so par three’s kind of course.

I have never had the pleasure of an ace. Got close to an eagle on a par 5 once.... but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

Now, at putt-putt, I routinely aced every hole.

Quite honestly, my next goal, because I already have two eagles, is an albatross/double eagle. They are even more rare and I don't really expect to ever get one.

I'd kill for a good course that allows walking. I'm stuck between "you can walk on our goat track" or "you can't walk on our manicured course". It really ticks me off when it is "cart path only". I'd walk it faster.

My niece thinks that you can just pick up the ball, walk to the hole and drop it in. She stopped playing when she found out that she couldn't cheat to win. Of course, she denies ever cheating. Now we're looking for a new owner for her snazzy clubs that her Nana bought her.

We've seen that she mostly uses her creative problem solving skills for good rather than evil so we've forgiven her. Certainly, Nana is sad about it but she's seen our beloved girl move on.

Now she wants to play six string acoustic guitar. Like Taylor Swift. I'm researching music resale shops. Just in case she decides she wants to become a drummer instead.

Congratulations on your milestone, zipplewrath. The more elusive they are the sweeter when you get there. Cheers!

❤ miss pants.

Congrats!!!
I've been playing 52 years. (Started when is was 12.)
I quit counting eagles about 15 years ago, at around 70. (A lot were pitch-ins or chip-ins on par 5s.)
I've had many since, but other than the 4 iron second shot last year on a 410 yard par 4, I don't remember exactly how many, or any details.
But, I've never had one on a par 3.
Cool for you, Z!
