Miami pulls out of Sun Bowl; WSU participation in jeopardy

The Fenway Bowl and Military Bowl were both canceled due to the pandemic on Sunday as coronavirus outbreaks at Virginia and Boston College forced them to call off their postseason plans.

The game scheduled for Wednesday at Fenway Park was to pit the Cavaliers against SMU. The Military Bowl scheduled for Monday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland, between Boston College and East Carolina was canceled because of positive COVID-19 tests at BC.

Also Sunday, Miami said it would not play in the Sun Bowl, which was scheduled for Friday against Washington State. The Hurricanes have been dealing with a virus outbreak for several days.

“This is not the way we wanted to see this season come to an end,” Eagles coach Jeff Hafley said. “We just do not have enough players to safely play a game. My heart goes out to our seniors who will not have one final opportunity to wear a BC jersey and I can’t thank them enough for all the contributions they made to our program.”

1. Boise State unable to play in Arizona Bowl due to COVID-19 cases

Boise State became the latest team to back out of a bowl game due to COVID-19 cases.

The Broncos are unable to play in Friday's Arizona Bowl against Central Michigan per Barstool Sports, the title sponsor of the game. Boise State's inability to play the game may set up an opportunity for Central Michigan to play Washington State in the Sun Bowl.

The Cougars are looking for an opponent to play in El Paso on Friday after Miami had to back out of the Sun Bowl because of COVID-19 cases.

There are many financial reasons for Central Michigan to head to El Paso to play Washington State. The Sun Bowl has a combined payout of over $4 million while the payout for teams in the Arizona Bowl is less than $500,000. That disparity sets up a potential scenario where the Arizona Bowl is canceled.

The Sun Bowl is among the 2nd oldest bowls (1935). It has always been a great matchup.

There is more money and more prestige playing in the Sun Bowl. The Arizona Bowl isn't even going to be shown on ESPN.

It also doesn't help that the sponsors of the Arizona Bowl have reputations that are in the gutter.
