NCAA bans six college basketball players after gambling investigation reveals game-fixing at three schools

The NCAA Committee on Infractions released decisions on three Division I schools and six college basketball players in unconnected cases, each involving illegal gambling and/or game-manipulation activity.

The players formerly played at Arizona State, Mississippi Valley State and New Orleans. None of the schools are being punished, as the NCAA determined the coaches and most other players were not connected to or aware of the unconnected schemes.

"While the cases at each school are not directly related, the violations for each case involved betting-related game manipulation and/or student-athletes providing information to known bettors," according to the NCAA's release. "Additionally, all three cases involved lack of cooperation by student-athletes, who knowingly provided false or misleading information to investigators. As a result of the sports betting violations, the student-athletes all violated ethical conduct rules, triggering permanent ineligibility."

BJ Freeman is the biggest name of them all. The former Arizona State guard was second on the team in scoring in 2024-25, averaging 13.7 points, in addition to 3.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists. He will never play college basketball again, nor will the former players at Mississippi Valley State and New Orleans: Cedquavious Hunter (UNO), Dyquavian Short (UNO), Jamond Vincent (UNO), Donovan Sanders (MVSU) and Alvin Stredic (MVSU).

as if nothing like this could happen once an athlete gets in too deep to the sports bookies.

4. No wonder ASU basketball looks like a different team this season

Though I think that has more to do with the transfer portal than with the story. I remember Freeman but he didn't stand out like Jayden Quaintance who I see is now with the Kentucky Wildcats.

Arizona State last year did well in the non-conference portion of the season but struggled badly in Big 12 play. One player tanking games could definitely affect the team's ability to win games. Now we have a whole new team with several new players from the transfer portal mostly from mid major schools as well as international. Tough to judge how good they really are, not until the Gonzaga game or the Maui Invitational.

I could see the players from mid majors with not much to play for to easily more get involved but this isn't the first time a player tanking games happened to ASU basketball. It also happened in the 90s but that was before NIL so that was more likely to happen.

Clase, 27, and Ortiz, 26, were both charged with wire fraud conspiracy, honest services wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery and money laundering conspiracy. The top charges carry a potential punishment of up to 20 years in prison in the event of a conviction.
