April 22

1876: In the first game in National League history, the Boston Red Stockings defeat the Philadelphia Athletics 6-5.

1903: The New York Highlanders (later re-named the Yankees) play their first ever game, a 3-1 loss to the Washington Senators.

1956: Yankees pitcher Don Larsen hits a grand slam in a 13-6 win over the Boston Red Sox.

1981: Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Fernando Valenzuela strikes out 11 in a 1-0 shutout of the Houston Astros, the lone run batted in by Valenzuela himself.

1993: After walking the first two batters, Seattle Mariners Chris Bosio retires the next 27 batters and finishes with a no-hitter of the Red Sox.

2017: Tyler Mahle throws an 88-pitch perfect game for the Cincinnati Reds' AA affiliate.

2018: Brandon Belt works a 21-pitch appearance against Jaime Barria before a lineout. This is the most pitches in one plate appearance since 1988 when pitch counts were first consistently
tracked.
