I wonder if "The Tribe" would work for the new name for Cleveland's baseball team?

The team has been referred to as that for years too, or is that consider a pejorative also and to close to the former name? Doesn't seem so to me, it's almost affectionate.

It's kind of like the "The Heat" or "The Avalanche".

7. Well, you'd never use it as a singular in reference to a player, because it is not a noun.

Sort of like the Stanford Cardinal, but an inverse case.

because Cleveland has absolutely nothing going for it. Except maybe the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The "Rockers"? But that is too similar to the Rockies.

There were a number of names that came up that were considered "neutral, but positive", "directed, but positive" or acceptable in the right area/context. I don't remember them all, but I know "WARRIOR" and "Braves" were considered "directed, but positive" and I believe that tribe was a "neutral positive." "Chiefs" was considered "directed, but positive." Obviously, this speaks only to those local Native American representatives.

There were a lot of school names that they didn't have a major problem with... Maybe more will come to me later.

On edit: these discussions were limited to renaming high school teams. I don't think there was any discussion of differences with professional commercial teams, but in retrospect, I think they would have seen the issues as distinctly different. Encouraging youth with positive Native American imagery is one thing. Exploiting it for commercial value (especially with degrading logos and commercial paraphernalia) is quite another.

Now just a cap "C" is used on their baseball caps. I think the team is trying to do the right thing which is why I was wondering if "The Tribe" would work. You mentioned that in the meeting you attended it was viewed as neutral positive, that's a good thing.

How was the name "Indians" viewed? Was it objected to. It doesn't seem negative to me, but the association with that logo is probably too much to overcome.
