The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired third baseman Nolan Arenado in a trade with the Colorado Rockies, sources confirmed to ESPN's Jeff Passan on Friday.

The Rockies are getting multiple players in the deal and will send upward of $50 million to St. Louis, sources said.

The news was first reported by The Athletic.

More at the link. At this time, it hasn't been revealed what the Cardinals are giving up in return.

I don't know what the Rockies are getting in return. I've heard some rumors, but everything I read is different. Austin Gomber is the consistent name mentioned. Luken Baker or Jhon Torres have been mentioned a lot as well as part of the package. I figure there is probably someone from the Cardinals 40-man roster (possibly a salary dump) going and probably another prospect, as well, based on what I have read.

Arenado was going to walk at the end of 21. (He may walk from the Cardinals.) He wants to be with a potential winner. The Rockies selling price was only going to go down. The Cardinals give up some fairly decent talent they really don't have a place for. While this will hurt them this year, they really had an uphill climb in the NL West.

I like the trade because, while the Cardinals usually make an effort to get to the post season, they don't always go the extra mile to nab talent like this. I do look forward to seeing how this all falls out.

Colorado Rockies DID NOT want him playing in the same division.

Before a game one September afternoon in 2017, as the Dodgers breezed to another division title and the Rockies clawed for a Wild Card spot, Nolan Arenado walked over to the visitors' dugout at Coors Field. He waved to Corey Seager, who was conducting an interview. Seager went to greet his friend. The superstar who grew up near Los Angeles and the superstar who played for Los Angeles chatted for a few moments before the former went back to batting practice. The latter was smiling as he returned to the bench.

"That guy," Seager chuckled, "wants to be a Dodger so bad."
