Roberto Clemente: More than Latin America's baseball star

He’s a household name to Latino baseball fans and often referred to as a hero, gone too soon.

The legacy of Roberto Clemente is still treasured today, proven nearly 50 years after his death.

In Central Florida, the community pushed to rename Stonewall Jackson Middle School in Orange County. In fact, the Orange County School Board unanimously voted to rename the facility Roberto Clemente Middle on Sept. 21, coincidentally during Hispanic Heritage Month.

Advocates for the name say it honors the diverse population of the school while giving students an example of what they can aspire to be.

The value of his name goes beyond the Latino community’s baseball star.

We had been there a couple days, and at last went to decorate the main dining room, which faced the inside of a mall, with windows, and openings from restaurant to the mall concourse.

A few people stopped and watched us work, and just moved on. Then we went to hang the owner commissioned Roberto Clemente shadow box, and related items requested and provided by the owner. A Jersey, photos, and posters around the giant shadow box full of memorabilia of Clemente.

We turned to look out at the mall, and there were 200 people watching us. Some of them were wiping tears. The man was like a god to them.

I grew up in Pittsburgh in the 1970's. One of my earliest memories was of the night that Clemente died. The whole city was traumatized.
