Okay, somebody help me out with baseball rules.

I've been watching videos on this appeal play in the Phillies/Pirates game. Here are two videos I've watched:

The second video says that the umpire got the call right, because the runner missed the base.
Which might make sense if the fielder hadn't touched the bag. But it looks to me like he comes down with the ball and lands on the bag. So if the runner missed the bag, why wouldn't he be done on the force out? Is a tag really needed?

When overrunning first base, if the batter-runner misses the base, he is nevertheless presumed to have touched the base and is technically safe unless the defense appeals before the runner returns to touch the base. In this situation, do not call the runner out when a throw arrives at first base unless an unmistakable appeal is made before the runner returns to the base.

6. Yeah, it's kind of moot in that sense.

It was a blown call really.

But it's weird that in a play where he had missed the bag, the umpire has to declare him safe and the defense has to specifically appeal to the umpire before the runner can be declared out.

7. Right, but I don't see any other way to handle it.

It's imperative the ump makes a call, where if he missed second or third, no call is ever made and everyone assumes he stepped on the bag until someone contests it.
