Marlins blank Giants

These are the times in which we live: Tom Koehler and three relievers combined to shut out the Giants, Giancarlo Stanton hit one of his gazillion-foot home runs, and yet the Marlins presented the game ball from Saturday night's 5-0 victory to an employee sitting in their clubhouse.

As every player on the field was watching the flight of Brandon Hicks' second-inning drive high off the bricks in right field, Miami administrative coach Pat Shine had his eyes glued to a monitor.

He had been waiting all season to catch an opposing runner missing a bag, and he finally nabbed one. Shine phoned the dugout and told manager Mike Redmond to challenge a ruling that Hicks touched first base on an apparent double.

The umpires in New York looked at the replay, saw what Shine saw and called Hicks out.
