I have an overgrown corner in my backyard. I've been seeing Brown Thrashers

flying in and out so I suspected they were nesting in there. Sure enough, two adult birds visited the front yard this afternoon and they had two fledglings with them. While I was watching, they even fed the young ones before they flew off.

I think I'll wait til this fall to clean up that corner.

1. Good idea! Maybe even consider leaving it--maybe they'll come back next year?

I don't know if they return to previous nestings. But it's worth a thought.

2. Good for you! I have robins who have returned year after year, and they seem to always build nests or reuse

the old nests on my gutters/down sprouts, and so I leave the old nests there for them and they do reuse them. They will eventually fall apart and fall off the gutters when totally used up, and that is when I will carefully remove them. They have been coming for years, and it's a sign of spring for us when we see the two of them. An enjoyable spring ritual.

I also have blue jays too (two also) that come all of the time, but they don't really live in my yard, just in the alley somewhere. I 'click' at them al of the time and they seem to chirp back. Overall, this is a nice ritual we go through every year.

3. Since I put a bird feeder up a few years ago, I've been surprised

at the number of birds that live nearby. It was great entertainment during the pandemic.

They have learned the sound of the lid on the metal pail where I store bird seed. It's just like ringing a dinner bell. I barely make it back to the porch before they come flying in.

4. Here's a first. A Brown Thrasher actually came to the feeder this morning and got a peanut.

I was also paid a visit from the female Downy Woodpecker and a fledgling this morning.

6. People have been seeing a ton of them - not sure why.

Have never seen one before but two of them are my first visitors.
