The birds *finally* discovered my new feeder

It's been up nearly a month - nothing.

Last weekend they all descended on it.

my backyard, which is full of chickens, is a regular stopover for hawks around here. and people wonder why i keep roosters. lol.

5. you should hear the racket.

omg. once a hawk caught a girl grazing in the neighbors yard. got me up and out to give chase w the dogs. it was up and out in a nanosecond.
wouldnt, couldnt live w/o dogs.

8. yeah, for a big raptor, songbirds not a big draw.

sure is wasnt a coopers hawk? aka chicken hawk. regular visitor here and rebounding in the area thank to the tasty backyard hens.

dont get that much practice around here. mostly red tails.
i've had the coopers sit in my tree, tho.

17. A very sad mourning dove is hunkered down in the crab in the freezing rain

doesn't look happy at all.

Saw Canada geese, green wing teal, wood ducks and mallards is a melt pond yesterday.

25. While DU was down...

Had a rose breasted grosbeak, several catbirds and a ruby throated hummingbird at the feeder.

The poor RTHB actually pecked at the seeds.

Yesterday, had a turkey vulture flyby - chased by local crows.

When I was young they filled the sky at dusk.

i love looking at the birds at the feeder but only know a handful of them. definitely not the variety you've been enjoying, but more than i had expected.

30. Get a good bird guide (I like Peterson's Eastern Birds) and study it

Depending on where you are in NC - you will get a bunch!

i ordered the field guide to feeder birds. i know we get finches yellow, house and/or purple, cardinals, chickadees and titmouses and beyond that, a variety of LGBs (little grey birds). have seen 2 kinds of hummingbird but so far this year only ruby throated. the first finch actually was just observed this morning. it seems as if it may not be as good a year as last, but we'll see as the year goes on.
