But all the birds are making spring calls even with a foot of ice and snow on the ground.

I did see Sandhill Cranes are back.

I have observed blue jays alerting hawk positions up and down a golf course. Basically they take turns reporting, then wherever there's a hawk overhead, the closest one will go silent. Or so that seems to be the pattern.

I know red tailed hawks around here like clear midday skies.

I'll pay closer attention to what the blue jays are up to on a rainy day.
