1st endangered piping plover chick at montrose beach, chicago.

to ritchie daley's everlasting credit, he cared about the birds of chicago.
the legend is that he came into his city hall office one day and asked his aids- how come we only got one kind of boid here? all we gots is pigeons. why is that?
when someone got back to him that the answer had to do w habitat, he went all out to create habitat in the city.

one of his projects was to enlarge the habitat at montrose beach on lake michigan. the "magic hedge" there is an internationally famous birding spot.
he expanded dunes there, and they have come.

not sure how many plovers there are, but this is the second clutch, and the first successful hatch.
the last clutch was lost to a storm that flooded the nest, and the couple moves uphill a bit.
there have been volunteer guards around the nest for weeks now.

Cute, little guys. Darting in the sand, back and forth. Difficult to see because they are so small.
