Apologies for the poor quality photo - only the little pocket camera on me!
These magnificent birds are large, playful, noisy and when in flight, appear to flap their wings in slow motion - unmistakable.

We have a few old stands of (non indigenous) pine trees in town; the nuts in the pine cones are their favourite food; they can shred a pine cone to fibres in a short time.

(17,154 posts)In the remote groups! Hey bc
We have a couple of iconic black avians; the swan and the cockatoo.
At some point along the Indonesian archipelago, the Australian plate subducts rapidly and seems to create an above water (as well as a below ground) boundary. This has been called the Wallace line and it demarcates the Indonesian life forms from the Australiasian.
Examples: Australasia has no large carnivorous mammals - no bears, cougars etc. We have big lizards.
We have around 90% of the world's poisonous snakes.
I'm still learning about the Wallace Line.

(24,562 posts)I must admit that I know very little about Australia other than current news events. I hope you stay away from the poisonous snakes!

(16,389 posts)I had no idea that Australia has 90% of the world's poisonous snakes--yikes! I know you have some rather spectacular spiders down there, but I was not aware of the snakes.
I'm one of those odd people who isnt creeped out by snakes in general, the nonvenomous ones, that is! I think they're fascinating. But the venomous ones? No way, José. Keep those things far, far away from me, man!
