Texas is one of the best birding states! Who'da thought?

Texas Parks and Wildlife is largely self funding because, well, Republicans. This is one of the finest government agencies I'm aware of. They maintain habitat, acquire land for recreation and preserve all manner of wildlife.

They are funded by hunting/fishing licenses (I buy a fishing license every year even tho I rarely fish), taxes on boat fuel sold at marinas and through subscriptions to Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine.

A while ago I happened to catch this episode of Nature on PBS all about Big Bend National Park and I was just blown away at the sheer variety of wildlife there. Probably a photographer’s paradise!

I studied birding here in Texas. Both the Eastern and Western flyways pass through Texas. There are about 450 species that live or travel in the state. Also multiple habitats across the state.
