It’s not easy to carry two sunflower seeds in your beak when you’re a small and cute Black-capped Chickadee.

1. I love chickadees and their buzzy little song

They usually grab a seed, take off to a nearby twig, put the seed between their feet and crack it

2. I offer them shelled sunflower hearts, to save them time in frigid weather :)

3. I'm sure they love it. At least in your hand the squirrels won't get to it

4. I don't hand feed even in warmer weather, but they are very friendly. They have plenty of feeders...

and there are several squirrels, but not as many as in previous years. Right now, starlings have arrived with this blast of frigid weather, but they are eating the cornmeal mush/rendered suet mix I made for them and not raiding the feeders.

5. Yeah plenty of starlings here. They will decimate a suet cake.

I can’t put out as many seed feeders as I would like because I live on the second floor, deck and we have tons of squirrels

6. When things get out of hand, I place some feeders inside crab trap cages to limit entry

7. Crab trap is a good idea, I might try it sometime. These squirrels are wily little devils
