Nice. That "guy" with the extended neck is probably the "look-out". NCarolinawoman Mar 2014 #1

Apparently geese always have one or two that go on "sentry" duty. It's a small gathering so that might be the Dad looking after his grown-up kids and wife. When I see very large flocks, I have always noticed there are one or two that take on sentry duty, but I can't quite figure out who decides who will do this job.

By the way, I really enjoy your sunset photos over in the photography group.

There were a few more with this group I didn't catch in this pic, but did want to show the sentry! Usually I see a big group in this field and adjacent field, which is next to the river, and the larger groups don't allow me to spot the sentry, but obviously there's ONE who flies off first. I see the geese on my way to/from grocery, and often they're in large groups. These let me drive closer than usual before flying off.

Here's another shot of these:

Hoping some day to be able to catch them when they do fly off, but the sun toward me has kept me from being able to catch them. SOME day!!!
