The simple explanation: Because he was searching for big-play opportunities, he was late getting to his checkdowns. That helps explain why some of those seemingly low-risk passes were so off-target.

It’s like, ‘Go through your reads and take the checkdowns when the defense presents itself the way it does and build off that. Rather than trying to search for the play and look for the big play and then when it’s not there, not having confidence in our checkdowns and stuff. So that’s something that I have to be better at."

Silver: This would be problematic for any quarterback, but it’s especially concerning for Purdy. His ability to study the opposing defense, quickly discern its coverage and confidently and accurately throw the ball to the desired target is his superpower. Take that away, and — in the words of one of the two Hall of Fame quarterbacks with whom I discussed this Wednesday — it’s like Purdy is naked out there on the field. Unlike Mahomes or Jackson or Josh Allen, he can’t fall back on exceptional athletic ability or arm strength (or both).
