The Houston Texans will hire David Culley, QB Coach and

A lot of people are having heartburn over this hire. But I want to point out 2 things.

First
DeShaun Watson apparently admire the guy, so Houston now has a chance of keeping him.

Second
Before he became the Head Coach of the San Francisco 49ers, the NFL Hall of Fame Coach, the legendary Bill Walsh was a career assistant coach.

Will Culley find a Jerry Rice and the other receivers and running backs that Walsh found? Maybe, maybe not. If he can hold onto Watson and give him a few decent weapons, he certainly has a solid young QB that has a burning desire to win.

1. It is going to be tough without the 1st and 2nd round draft choices

This is the second time in four years that they have given up their top two draft choices (ironically to the same team again - Browns in 2018 and Dolphins now).

Offense isn't the problem because of Watson. They have got to do something with that defense. O'Brien as GM was a near extinction level event.

I can't understand wanting to go to the Jets for Watson. The Dolphins I can see. They were a near playoff team, and have extra draft capital. After stripping the draft capital away from the Jets, they would be in worse shape than the Texans are in right now.

If I was the Texans, given Watson's contract, I would take both 2021 1st round draft choices along with the 2022 1st round draft choice from either the Dolphins or the Jets. Maybe a player of need in the mix as well. I don't think either teams make the trade because of Watson's contract.

I would like to see Watson on the Dolphins. Not a Dolphins fan, but I think it would be good for him.

4. Yes. Watson to the Jets has me scratching my head.

I see no upside for him that he can’t get in Houston. But players have lives outside of football, maybe he doesn’t like the social vibes in Texas. I believe he had been looking at the Jets, even before they hired Saleh. If I were the Jets or the Dolphins, I would trade the starting QB to Texas and add a first and second rounder, to get Watson, I believe that would close the deal. Houston is likely going to have to eat some of Watson’s contract.

Houston needs to do something about it’s defense, a team can’t count on scoring 38 points per game to win. This where I believe the new coach may prove to be a diamond in the rough. He has a good relationship with the great Ozzie Newsome, one of the most underrated GMs in history, IMO. The new coach can focus on picking up some late round monsters that can work well with the declined, but still very good JC Watt to make the defense a factor. Remember Jerry Rice was an unknown out of Mississippi Valley State, Tom Brady was a sixth rounder. If you look at the history of early rounders versus middle rounders, it has been a hit and miss situation, lots of middle rounders have turned into stars, even HOFs. So, IMO, draft position in the first 5-6 rounds is grossly overrated, the key is the staff doing the drafting having an eye for talent, that is something that Bill Walsh excelled at, drafting a blocking back out of Nebraska because he saw a star NFL running back, and got it, drafting an unknown guy named Jerry Rice, drafting three unknown rookie defensive backs to go with the higher drafted Ronnie Lott.

It looks like Houston’s new coach is a guy who doesn’t have such a big ego that he won’t hire under-appreciated, but very good offensive and defensive coaches, maybe he will raid Baltimore the way the Miami coach did New England.

2. Good News! The Bills keep their coordinators.

The Ravens have the worst passing offense in the NFL, but hopefully Culley and Watson are copacetic. I don’t want to see him in Miami or New England.

5. The quarterback coach is not the offensive coordinator.

The problem in Baltimore appeared to have been the overall offensive scheme, I believe I read that they parted ways with the OC after they got bounced out of the playoffs. But they were going to keep the QB coach until Houston came knocking, then they decided to let the guy take his long awaited shot at a HC job.

3. Congrats to Houston.

Jaguars hired Urban Meyer - so we can expect (MAYBE) a few good years and then he will quickly bail with no notice. Don't think these grown men would tolerate the abuse that Meyers' cohort did and Urban hid it. I hate that he's our new coach, he's such an asswipe.

6. The history of college coaches that moved to the NFL is not a good one.

The Seattle coach and Bill O’Brien (for a while were exception), but Carroll had been a head coach in New England. Bill Walsh was a head coach of a CFL team before bouncing between college and NFL assistant coaching jobs, before leaving as Stanford’s coach to take the San Fran HC job.

One difference between college and the PROs is that in college, the HC is god, he or she control pretty much every aspect of players’ lives, the HC can make a kid’s life miserable and the kid has little or no recourse. In the PROs, the HC has to motivate men that are making considerable fortunes, he or she can threaten to cut a high draft choice, but that only means that player gets a shot with another team. Bill Walsh got that he had to motivate men making fortunes to want to win, high strung college coaches like Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban did not. I see Meyer becoming the latter type of NFL coach, he will spend 2-3 years being flummoxed about why the schemes that worked so well in college don’t work in the NFL, and he will have too big an ego to look inward and see that his methods of dealing with high paid men is the root cause.

7. Yeah and I don't think that Meyer will be the exception.

He's way too entitled and whiney already and I don't think he will do well. You can count on the Jaguars owner to make the wrong move, every single time.

8. A lot of rich people make poor decisions when choosing leadership people.

Those rich people became rich by either inheritance, or by suppressing all lower level people, while cutting corners and getting away with (prime example, Trump).

They are lousy at picking people that must lead in areas where the rich people have little to no experience. The Ford family in Detroit is another example, they are generally as inept as the Jacksonville ownership family (the father and I believe, a son).

9. I feel sorry for you guys then.

So now I'm just hoping for a little luck since our owners are nincompoops when it comes to football. Actually I think a lot of Jacksonville's problems is that the son interferes with the draft picks and the team is just an indulgence and asset for dad who doesn't give one damn about the results..

10. In Florida we have the Bucs and Dolphins also.

The Dolphins were the first NFL franchise for a long time and has a legendary history, so there are still many Floridians that are attached to that team. The Bucs started out in the seventies, so they have the second biggest following, being particularly strong in my part of the state, given our distance from Tampa. The Jags actually don’t have a large following, at least in my part of the state.

Not a formula for having fans, but the owner doesn't give a fudge.

14. I believe that the old man cares, although he doesn't seem to

have the wisdom to hire good people, then back his son off while those people do their jobs. My experience with them is that it takes a lot for self made people to relinquish the steering wheel, they tend to want to drive, even while sitting in the back seat.

13. How do you rate incoming talent at that level?

A Coach that has a good eye for talent can get teams to perform. Houston won’t have first and second round picks this year due to O’Brien’s mistakes, but many of the greatest players in NFL history were not first or second rounders. Houston has some incumbent talent, JC Watt is not what he used to be, but he is still a formidable defensive player, if the coach get a couple young players to go with him and bring in a couple veterans on one year deal, then a defense that was weak becomes formidable - plus, Houston has one of the best defensive coordinators (though hit and miss as a head coach) in the business coming in as it’s defensive coordinator.

In addition, there really is a pretty razor thin difference between incoming NFL players, those men are the cream of the players who played in college. A good eye can spot the guy who isn’t a high draft pick, but has the physical abilities and, most importantly, the mental construction to turn into a potent NFL player really fast with the right coaching.

15. Yep, this draft and off season acquisitions will tell the tale for me.

I am always hopeful, but not expectant that we could have an excellent draft, free agent, and of course good coaches this year. Meyers is smart, but he's never been in the NFL, plus very arrogant so not sure how well he will adjust if his hardass ways aren't tolerated in the NFL.
