Is Jeff Bezos checking out opportunity to purchase Chargers?

Ownership of the Los Angeles Chargers may be in jeopardy, and former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos just might swoop in to save the day. That is, if you really want Bezos running anything. The sister of Chargers owner Dean Spanos has filed for a petition for a forced sale of the team. The court filing alleges that the Spanos family is going into considerable debt owning the Chargers. The only rational solution, according to the 156-page document, would be to put the franchise on the market.

Bezos has been cited as a potential replacement. Previous reports have indicated he would love to own an NFL team someday. Given the strange state of the Chargers, he may soon have the opportunity.

Fate of Chargers’ ownership at stake as Dean Spanos’ sister asks court to force sale

In an attempt to force the sale of the Chargers, a sister of controlling owner Dean Spanos filed a petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Thursday. In it, she argues that mounting debt has imperiled the family’s finances and that the only solution is to put the NFL franchise on the market.

The petition by Dea Spanos Berberian, who serves as co-trustee of the family trust along with her brother, alleges the trust’s debts and expenses exceed $353 million. In addition, according to the filing, the trust doesn’t have a plan to pay more than $22 million it has pledged to charities.

Just let it die. Spanos ruined the Chargers along with help from corrupt city officials in San Diego.

...except that there's no longer a stadium for them to play in down there.

When I went to SDSU the Aztecs home games were played there. I was in the marching band so always had a prime seat on the 50 and entered through the tunnel onto the field. It was always the Murph to me. At 55 years old it was definitely showing its age! Too bad its going. I remember when we hosted the Super Bowl...what a beautiful day. I'm sure the rest of the country was so jealous!

...but, IMHO, if Jeff really wanted to own a sports team, I wish he'd bankroll a new NBA franchise for Seattle instead.

bought the team. Love him or hate him the man is super competent and able.

In real life I'd much rather see him buy the Dallas Cowboys because Dallas will never win another NFL championship as long as Jerry Jones is the owner and General Manager.
