GTA 5...frustration

Hi,
Long time gamer, started with Atari, got PS4 last year. Have played a lot of somewhat open world games, Assasin's, Shadow of Mordor, Witcher 3, all of which I enjoyed and enjoyed exploring. I got a used GTA 5 and it sure started off with a bang and I thought this was going to be kick ass. Now I'm stuck. I have two characters, it seems like you have to just luck out to get missions. It says check your phone, all that does is allow me to hook up with friends and get trashed. I haven't figured out how to get to play as Trevor. I get that it is non linear, but geesh, I'm really at a loss. It was fun just driving around and jacking cars and stuff, but now I'm pretty frustrated. Los Santos doesn't seem nearly as big as the above mentioned games. I guess I could just try a walkthrough..not sure what my problem is.

I did look at a map and saw all these alien things on it and a bunch of other stuff, I just can't seem to advance.

Anyone have any suggestions on how the heck to advance in the game better.

On Edit- I don't know why I was being such a dumbass about this game. I followed EarlG's advice, I guess I'm just getting too old for these games, just like everything else in life. I'm now gathering supplies for my first heist.

1. The story missions are marked with the character's initial

So if you're playing as Michael you want to head to the blue "M" icons on the map. If you're playing as Franklin, look for the green "F" icons. All the other icons are optional mini-games or side missions. Trevor doesn't show up till later, after you've done some of the story -- his story missions will be an orange "T".

3. I'm replying to my own thread again

This is one of the most twisted games I have ever played. The dialogue and some of the actions of the characters are just plain messed up. I was playing as Michael and went to a tattoo parlor that had some guy that did something bad to Michael's daughter and that whole ink gun thing made me crack up.

Driving, planes, parachuting, motorcycles, bikes, swimming, helicopters, jetskis, not sure what else but it sure as heck has a lot. I'm at 68% now, not sure what it tops out at if you complete all the major missions. I know there are a ton of other side quests that I probably won't do, fun though.

try finishing strangers and freaks mission. and do some heist on gta online.

6. Skip the alien side mission

I always do, pretty much the only side missiin I do.
