Passengers would also be due a refund if the airline adds a stop to their itinerary.

I had to stay overnight in the Atlanta airport once, decades ago. They kept moving the flight time. What happened that night was one of the strangest things I have ever experienced.

This rule wouldn’t apply to that. It only appears to relate to things the airline has control over.
