A GLOBAL atheist church movement will host its first gathering of Adelaide non-believers on Wednesday, after a visit by its founder to the City of Churches spurred its creation.

Founder Sanderson Jones said the idea had its genesis earlier, but it was on a trip here that he was finally spurred on to the actual creation of the Sunday Assembly.

He was telling a high-profile Adelaide personality that he was thinking about creating a godless gathering.

"I'd put it slightly on the backburner … then she was like 'you've got to do that' … so I did," he said.

The UK-based comedian started the assemblies in the UK earlier in the year, and they are now spreading across the US and Australia.

If one were to see those out of context, I think most people would think they were seeing an evangelical church.
