(28,151 posts)And really, you bring this here? I daresay your oh so innocent purpose doesn't quite ring true.
In other words, bullshit. You come to AA, spew lots of god talk, it gets locked cause we want to be spared from such nonsenseat least in that one tiny corner of the world and then you come crying into this mud-pit that the evil atheists shut down your "bridge building" post.
Well, at least you chose the correct forum to drag your cross through.

(28,151 posts)All the work I've done in politics, mostly done w/believers. All know i'm atheist and guess what. They don't obnoxiously thank god for me, tell me I'm christ-like or other annoying religious-y nonsense. Know why? Cause they are respectful of me and my views and they (key word here, please take note) genuinely want to work to achieve our common goals.
I guess some can just focus on common goals while others use that opportunity to push the god talk on unbelievers.

(22,340 posts)before running here to post this? Seriously. That pisses me off. I told you I had to wait for the other hosts to vote and then we would discussion the appeal. Before I even heard back from them you ran over here to do this. How can you possibly act like you are all innocent in this when you didn't even give me a chance to discuss this with you in messages?
And I would rather have this discussion with you about this in messages but not any more. You made this public so any response you want from me (and I hope any other host) is going to be made here. Unless the hosts in Religion lock this thread like I asked them to do in the SOP alert I made a while ago.
You stepped on a land mine and I have a hard time believing that you don't understand why. Why would you come into a safe haven and give us a bunch of god talk? If you want to say you appreciate that, why do you need the "I thank god for you" stuff?
bravenak
(34,648 posts)It was the wrong place to post it. It would be like me posting dark matter videos in the catholic group. Innappropriate even though i think they could help bring both sides together. I'm sure that most christians would not agree that it would be helpful.
If the Satanists came into religious safe havens offering up praise to lucifer for christians you would not be amused. I would, but you would probably want the op locked.

(34,648 posts)They are a do no harm type of group for the most part.
My point wasn't that what you said was wrong. You just posted in the AA group. We read the religion group too but that group is a safe haven that has been under scrutiny for a minute and people like to come in and alert troll. Be nice for us to have a place away from the gods praising. Thats just my opinion.
arely staircase
(12,482 posts)I genuinely thought I was pointing out common denominators and being nice. Clearly not.
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)It's also not the purpose of safe havens. YOU might allow it, but the hosts of other safe havens WOULD NOT allow that behavior, per the PURPOSE of safe havens.
You don't see me wandering into the catholics forum, saying something pleasant and then 'wink wink nudge nudge, your god doesn't exist'.
For good reason.

(22,340 posts)But you didn't say the equivalent of that in A/A. You could have said, "I believe in god, but I really appreciate the work atheists do for civil rights and I enjoy working with you on those causes." That's a lot different than the praying and "doing the work of Jesus" stuff you came in with.

(110,900 posts)It's enough to make one completely cynical about those who loudly proclaim their piety.
The A&A group is a safe haven that is the least safe one on DU. A small group of religious people have declared war on it.
That's incredibly sad.
Meanwhile, the religious right has wrecked the Christian brand to the point that young believers have been afraid to self identify as Christians lest they be lumped in with the zealots. That's sad, too.
The little group who thinks we're the enemy need to rethink things.

(9,267 posts)Why are you posting this? I thought you were being sincere, but making this thread makes me think I was duped.
Not only that the very thread you link too also had others thanking you for the thread. Was this a set up from the beginning?
This thread proves them right in every single way, and makes me feel like a complete tool.

(13,029 posts)And starting a thread titled "I thank god everyday for atheists" is provocative and deliberate flamebait. You're not a newbie, and you know perfectly well what a safe haven is and what type of behavior is expected there.

Goblinmonger
(22,340 posts)because they ran here to post this thread.
I locked the thread for reasons I hope you can understand. The member messaged me asking for a reconsideration. I told them I hadn't heard from the other hosts so the appeal might be unneeded but would let them know. This thread was posted before I heard back from either of the other hosts.
Running here to do this was bad. Especially given how tensions are right now.

(22,340 posts)The lock was going to stand and I wanted to have a discussion with them. They decided that was not the route to go.
I really hope the hosts here lock this thread. Nothing good is going to come from this right now. Tensions are WAY too high.

(22,340 posts)That is the way we have always done it since I've been a host there and it is what members seemed to want. If they reply to that thread and indicate that is not the case now, we will stop. We have always tried for a lot of transparency in that group.

(64,979 posts)going into the African American group and telling its members that she admires them, by saying, "That's mighty white of you." Such phrasing would be deliberate needling.
And *this* thread is like running to a "White Rights" group after being chastised for the original post and complaining that she tried soooo hard to be friends with those African Americans, but apparently they have no tolerance for white folks who try to build bridges with them.

(11,181 posts)And would be proud to call you our brother. Not all atheists are anti-theists, Most of us just don't believe in a deity and it's no big deal. And most of us feel no need for a safe haven. Why would we? We have no animosity toward people of faith, provided they don't judge us for our lack of faith, or try to convert us to their beliefs.
Personally, I think liberal Christians are on the front line of progressive politics and do a great job on civil rights issues. I would love to see more atheists, and people of other religions, join together in common cause against the injustices of the political right and the hypocrisy of fundamentalists and extremists of every stripe.
Unfortunately, you were seen as the enemy by a handful who hold sway in that group. I and other tolerant atheists have made similar mistakes in the past.
You must remember, it is a SAFE HAVEN. A special place where positive references to religion are immediately pounced upon.
So, my advice to you is to stay out of there, especially with this kind of post.
There are plenty of atheists, in the Religion Group, who never go near A&A, either because they are banned, like myself, or because they don't share the animus that prevails toward those who share your desire for bridge building.
I wish you well.
