Christian Rock Band Preaches Hate Of LGBT During School Assembly, Tells Girls To Be Submissive

When Dunkerton High School in Iowa invited a Christian rock band called Junkyard Prophet to perform during a school assembly this past Thursday, they never expected to get a hate filled sermon as part of the deal. But that’s exactly what happened.

According to the Lacrosse Tribune, the message was supposed “to be about bullying and making good choices,” such as being non-violent and against drugs and alcohol. “Instead, junior and senior high students at Dunkerton High School and faculty members said they were assaulted by the group’s extreme opinions on homosexuality and images of aborted fetuses,” along with messages against strong independent women.

After the band performed their music, they separated the boys, girls, and faculty in the building, which should have been an immediate red flag. According to witnesses, the band talked to the boys about the band’s Ten Commandments and talked about musicians that have died of drug overdose. The discussion with the girls was much different. The band told them “to save themselves for their husbands and assume a submissive role in the household. The leader in that effort also forced the young ladies to chant a manta of sorts about remaining pure” and would not allow any of them to leave the room.

One parent, Jennifer Littlefield, told the Tribune about a phone call she received from her daughter after the assembly. “They told my daughter, the girls, that they were going to have mud on their wedding dresses if they weren’t virgins. I couldn’t even understand her, she was crying so hard. They told these kids that anyone who was gay was going to die at the age of 42. It just blows me away that no one stopped this.”

I think the first question is: Why was a Christian rock band playing at a public school in the first place?

Second Question: Why didn't administrators know what they were getting?

I think the answer to these question is that someone probably DID know EXACTLY what was going to happen.

And the school didn't have any idea? Gimme a fucking break. Someone inside the school KNEW, and now the school is going to have to pay. And that sucks, because schools are underfunded to begin with.

That’s right. Over the last few years, a band called Junkyard Prophet (through its youth outreach organization, You Can Run But You Cannot Hide) has been touring across Middle America, spewing its ultra-conservative message at hundreds of school assemblies along the way. And it’s received hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars for its efforts. Armstrong Williams, eat your heart out.

To be fair, unlike the Williams situation or the grossly misleading abstinence education program that the Bush Administration promulgated, there’s no allegation that the federal government is promoting or even tacitly endorsing Junkyard Prophet. Nonetheless, the band’s activities stand as yet another example of the publicly-funded, conservative indoctrination of America’s youth, and someone should put a stop to it.

How can anyone in this day and age believe in invisible, omnipotent sky fairies?

The greatest threat that humanity faces is the belief in god or gods.

The Christian Right has worked to modify the public school curriculum in a number of ways. It has made inroads by having its followers win school board elections.
Research suggests that these candidates run solely to propagate their religious or moral beliefs as school policy The smaller the jurisdiction, the greater the tendency for the Christian Right pragmatically to support favorable candidates who can win.
Iowa would be an easy in I would guess from having worked there for a year

The Good News Club: The Christian Right's Stealth Assault on America's Children by Katherine Stewart. I just finished reading it on Saturday and, in my opinion, it's essential reading for those wishing to learn more about the ultra-conservative Christian Right and its intentions to infiltrate and radically change the U.S. educational system. It also goes into detail about their concurrent desire to, if at all possible, destroy the public school system outright and replace it with religious schools.
