You don't have to be Christian to play!
(In fact, I'm an atheist, myself.)
I'll start with my own personal favorite.
They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not rise up against nation. Nor shall they study war any more.
Here's some Christians illustrating the meaning of this prophesy from Isaiah 2:4.
I think that they do a pretty good job, with poise, grace, humor, and a red tricycle and garden mattock:

But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

(45,251 posts)One refers to childbirth, the other to naked kids. (I would not have been a spelling nazi, but for the overtone or pedophiles.)
When I was in elementary school, the asst. football coach was our substitute teacher one day I guess the lesson plan for the day called for a spelling bee. The word he gave me was one of those words, and the sentence he gave me was "Please ____ with me while I leave the room." I spelled b-e-a-r. He told me I was wrong. It was b-a-r-e.
An adult teacher telling a little kid "Bare with me while I leave the room" could land the teacher in jail. But, I was too obedient to authority as a kid to mention that. So, I took the unfair loss in silence.
What a jerk I was!

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

(31 posts)I'm not a Christian any longer, but this chapter still resonates with me as the best synopsis I've ever seen on how to live your life. Don't let yourself be changed by the world. Don't think more of yourself than it is necessary to think; that is, not too much but not too little. Be thankful for your gifts, and use them to your best ability, but don't envy others their gifts, because we are all needed. Love others and show them honor. Work hard at whatever you do. Be hospitable and generous. Show empathy. Don't be too proud, but appreciate simple things. Be peaceable with everyone, and don't try to get revenge on your enemies, but shame them with your better nature. Do not let yourself be conquered by evil, but keep conquering evil with good. This verse once got me through a divorce with grace and dignity, and has guided my life ever since.

Next we headed for the land of Bashan, where King Og and his army attacked us at Edrei. But the LORD told me, 'Do not be afraid of him, for I have given you victory over Og and his army, giving you his entire land. Treat him just as you treated King Sihon of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon.' So the LORD our God handed King Og and all his people over to us, and we killed them all. We conquered all sixty of his towns, the entire Argob region in his kingdom of Bashan. These were all fortified cities with high walls and barred gates. We also took many unwalled villages at the same time. We completely destroyed the kingdom of Bashan, just as we had destroyed King Sihon of Heshbon. We destroyed all the people in every town we conquered men, women, and children alike. But we kept all the livestock for ourselves and took plunder from all the towns. Deuteronomy 3:1-7

When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl's owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment. Exodus 21

(45,251 posts)The third book of John, Chapter 1, verse 2 (KJV) is very sweet (and poetic):
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
I like the bit about everything boiling down to loving God and loving your neighbor as yourself and the bits about fixing your own faults and not judging others.
I don't know how things like that could possibly have gone so terribly awry.
And, now, a fun bit from the OT. (Yes, that's right: a fun bit from the OT)

(171 posts)Matthew 6:24-34
24 No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
25 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]?
28 And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe youyou of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we wear? 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

(41,205 posts)My son, defraud not the poor of his living, and make not the needy eyes to wait long.
2 Make not an hungry soul sorrowful; neither provoke a man in his distress.
3 Add not more trouble to an heart that is vexed; and defer not to give to him that is in need.
4 Reject not the supplication of the afflicted; neither turn away thy face from a poor man.
5 Turn not away thine eye from the needy, and give him none occasion to curse thee:
6 For if he curse thee in the bitterness of his soul, his prayer shall be heard of him that made him....
79 Deliver him that suffereth wrong from the hand of the oppressor; and be not fainthearted when thou sittest in judgment. ...
20 Observe the opportunity, and beware of evil; and be not ashamed when it concerneth thy soul.
21 For there is a shame that bringeth sin; and there is a shame which is glory and grace.
22 Accept no person against thy soul, and let not the reverence of any man cause thee to fall.
23 And refrain not to speak, when there is occasion to do good, and hide not thy wisdom in her beauty.
24 For by speech wisdom shall be known: and learning by the word of the tongue.
25 In no wise speak against the truth; but be abashed of the error of thine ignorance.
26 Be not ashamed to confess thy sins; and force not the course of the river.
27 Make not thyself an underling to a foolish man; neither accept the person of the mighty.
28 Strive for the truth unto death, and the Lord shall fight for thee.
29 Be not hasty in thy tongue, and in thy deeds slack and remiss.
30 Be not as a lion in thy house, nor frantick among thy servants.
31 Let not thine hand be stretched out to receive, and shut when thou shouldest repay.
