Sharon Kant-Rauch: Women can model religious chutzpah

Sharon Kant-Rauch
10:33 p.m. EST November 28, 2014

Some people say they aren’t religious because religion “does more harm than good.”

I’m always stunned by this analysis. The reason: it’s a sweeping denunciation of women.

Statistically, women are more religious than men. They have greater faith in God, pray and attend services more often, claim that religion is very important in their lives.

And they also do most of the work.

1. And religion

does much more harm to woman, individually and as a group than good.
I would say woman are one of the prime recipients of the harm religion does.

Just because some women think hiding their faces, belonging to their husbands and someone whose touch needs to be avoided is fine, cause it's God's will, doesn't make it good.

And where does she get this from?:

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Most religions were born out of a desire for more freedom and liberation, for more righteousness and justice. We must claim these core values and put them to work for women.

Most religions were born of some superstition people thought was true.

On the other hand, she is right that this will only change when women change it, they cannot expect the men who lead most religions to change.

I would say 'religion was born out of a need for control', and I suspect it's true and can certainly demonstrate the effect in practice, but I'll be honest enough to admit I can't prove it's literally true.

But I'm a man. I want to hear from an atheist woman. That is, if there are any left after DAWKINS!

...she's staking a position and acknowledges the pros and cons of all sides of the issue.

But that more of us could do that, we wouldn't have to put up with so much poo flinging.

This completely confuses the AUDIENCE with the EVENT ORGANIZERS.
If the fan base for Nickleback is 51% or higher majority female, and I say 'NICKLEBACK FUCKING SUCKS' it's not commentary about females. It's commentary about a shitty band.

However, the article stopped being funny with this paragraph, when the author finally got their shit together:

"Globally, religion doesn’t correlate with women’s equality. According to statistics from the World Values Survey, the more religious a country is, the less equality woman have. This remains true, even when researchers controlled for demographic characteristics and a country’s GNP."

Which ought to have been the point where most people would scrap the article and start over, writing about something else.

"The first thing we need is more female leadership. Even in this country, where women have a lot of choices, the number of women clergy has stagnated at about 10-12 percent for almost 20 years. Again there’s a disconnect. If women fill up the pews in almost every congregation and do most of the work, there should be a lot more women leaders."

Oh good fucking lord.
