Poll: 57% Of GOPers Support Making Christianity The National Religion

If you live in a conservative Christian part of America these are your neighbors and even your friends.

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/polltracker/poll-57-percent-republicans-christianity-national-religion

A majority of Republicans nationally support establishing Christianity as the national religion, according to a new Public Policy Polling survey released Tuesday.

The poll by the Democratic-leaning firm found that 57 percent of Republicans "support establishing Christianity as the national religion" while 30 percent are opposed. Another 13 percent said they were not sure.

It almost goes without saying that the Establishment Clause of the Constitution prohibits establishing of a national religion.

The poll was conducted among 316 Republicans from Feb. 20-22. The margin of error was plus or minus 5.5 percentage points.

do those knuckledraggers not understand? And these are the same asshats who love to wave the Constitution around and bloviate about how Obama (and liberals in general) are always violating it.

5. While that is appalling, it is an extremely low sample size.

316 respondents - 180 for, 95 against. It also is partially internet based, which is a bad sign.

I wonder why they didn't increase their numbers.

Even scarier is that 66% didn't believe in global warming and 49% did not believe in evolution. 76% said they were somewhat or very conservative and 72% are over 45.

They don't give much information on methodology at all.

I'm going to take this with a grain of salt.

6. The margin of error is fairly high, what you would think in a small sample size

It's comforting to think that only 50% of GOPers may be in favor of theocracy.

On the other hand it could be getting on towards two thirds.

I love the smell of an auto-da-fé in the morning.

more about their methodology.

I'm not even sure you can trust that MOE number in light of some of the other "data" they came up with.

The new survey finds that 34 percent of adults would favor establishing Christianity as the official state religion in their own state, while 47 percent would oppose doing so. Thirty-two percent said that they would favor a constitutional amendment making Christianity the official religion of the United States, with 52 percent saying they were opposed.

Although a large percentage of Americans said they would favor establishing a state religion, only 11 percent said they thought the U.S. Constitution allowed states to do so. Fifty-eight percent said they didn't think it was constitutional, and 31 percent said they were not sure.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the First Amendment, which (among other things) prohibits the government from establishing an official religion, also applies to the states.

Republicans were more likely than Democrats or independents to say that they would favor establishing Christianity as an official state religion, with 55 percent favoring it in their own state and 46 percent favoring a national constitutional amendment.

From the poll:
Republicans:
the country has Gone too far in keeping religion and government separate: 65%
Gone too far in mixing religion and government: 16%
Struck a good balance in terms of the separation of church and state: 11%
( Democrats 18%, 36% and 26% for same options)

on a state religion of Christianity in their state:
strongly favor: R 36%, I 18%, D 11%
favor: 19%, 12%, 15%
oppose: 18%, 16%, 16%
strongly oppose: 15%, 38%, 34%

Would you favor or oppose a Constitutional amendment which would make Christianity the official religion of the United States?
strongly favor: R 30%, I 15%, D 13%
favor: 16%, 14%, 13%
oppose: 23%, 16%, 16%
strongly oppose: 15%, 41%, 38%

I think there's a good case that the Republican party is becoming the Theocracy party.

They don't care about the truth and they don't care about the law. They only care about getting their way. That's what religion does to people.
