Related: About this forum‘Boys are curious': Meet the Duggar defenders using religion to excuse fondling your sleeping sister
Josh Duggar, his wife, and his parents issued statements Thursday confirming reports that he had engaged in inexcusable behavior more than a decade ago, when he was 14 years old, and he resigned his job with the anti-LGBT Family Research Council as calls poured into TLC to cancel the long-running 19 Kids and Counting.
However, the Duggars defenders offered prayers and messages of support on social media.
Love yall and Josh I admire you for admitting to your parents and getting help and again admitting it to Anna before you got married, said Leah Maxwell McCool. You are no different than anyone else who have sinned and changed their ways. Im standing beside you 100%!
Love the whole duggar family you are so blessed!!!! said Amy McGarvey.
Everyone makes mistakes but our God is a forgiving God, said Angela-Angie Nichols Long. When we ask for forgiveness, he forgives us. He died on the cross not only for sins of that time but for future sins as well. Keep your head up and remember whose you are.

(5,105 posts)... and then there's incest. No amount of curiosity could make billions of other people do that.

(115,669 posts)What about the sisters? Does anybody give a crap about them?
I have to think that there's a whole lot more to this story. Yes, he was only 14, but a 14-year-old is old enough to know that molesting your little sisters is a very, very bad thing to do. But what was going on in that family, which presumably didn't talk about sex at all, ever, because it's evil and ungodly unless done for procreation, that made him think that behavior was something that was either not so bad at all, or that even if it was bad, he could get away with it? Molesters often start out as molestees, after all.

(14,854 posts)is what I was taught in Fundie Sunday School. All of them, including just Thinking Bad Thoughts, get the exact same punishment - roasting in hell for eternity. Coveting is equal to stealing. Having a wet dream about your (adult) neighbor is equal to adultery, or rape, or murder, or genocide. Etc.
Like you, I suspect there's a lot more to this story.

(733 posts)From the way they handled Josh and their daughters, I would think that Child Protective Services would be doing an investigation of their parenting . . .

Being sexually abused causes a lifetime of pain.

(6,604 posts)the sarcasm thingie in my reply?
Lots of people buy into the "all is forgiven" bull. It's a pretty popular mechanism used to excuse high-profile-media religious types whenever their caught with their hand in the metaphorical cookie jar.
ETA: There is no such thing as "god's forgiveness."
There is a human sense of morality. Nothing more. If you require a higher power of some sort to provide guidance on how to treat your fellow human being, I don't get it.

(11,573 posts)Unfortunately, Josh Duggar shows no sign of it, nor do his enabling parents.

(11,573 posts)Unfortunately, he probably can't be charged now with what he did as a juvenile. If he kept up the molestation once he hit 17-18, though, he ought to be fair game.

(6,604 posts)I agree. I take your meaning. However, we should just let it go now because he's right with his god?

(11,573 posts)And I question whether he has repented or is "right with his god.". I see no evidence that be has even begun to try to make amends to his victims. Mere confession isn't enough.
As for prison, prosecutors are bound by the law. But pedophiles don't usually stop their behavior unless they are completely isolated from children. I'd bet a bunch he has a stash of kiddie porn. Find that, and they'd have him cold.

(34,648 posts)And he went right out campaigning against gays while hiding behind god. He lacks empathy but wants sympathy and forgivness. My least favorite type of religious person is the guilty person who judges the innocent.

(2,331 posts)I hope child protective services is starting an investigation pronto. Cause a 14/15 year old who molests his five year old sister isn't necessarily going to be squeamish about doing the same to his own little girl.
