Huge Ireland vote for gay marriage

BBC

The Republic of Ireland has voted overwhelmingly to legalise same-sex marriage in a historic referendum.

More than 62% voted in favour of amending the country's constitution to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.

It is the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage through a popular vote.

The referendum was held 22 years after homosexual acts were decriminalised in the Republic of Ireland

This looks like a good year for LGBTQ rights in the West.

If only we could export this success to the Africa, the Caribbean, and the East.

7. The Irish referendum decicided it by popular vote. No need for a judicial ruling.

but civil rights shouldn't be up for a vote. Minorities shouldn't have to depend on the whims of the majority to be treated fairly.

There is no need now for a judicial ruling to remedy a civil rights violation. The people there spoke resoundingly for them. There is no more potent political action.
