First I want to thank everyone for your very helpful suggestions for my dad's memorial. Talking with my mom, we decided to make it a celebration of his life and abandon trappings of funeral. We will take Hoppy's wonderful suggestion of asking friends to share memories of my father.
I wanted to let you all know of something I came across. There is a project called Symphony of Science that makes musical, sort of poetic readings from leading scientists. My dad was very much interested in the universe, and read a lot about it. He shared with me that if there was an afterlife, he would love his soul to go through the universe in discovery of what is out there. I thought that sounded like such a wonderful idea.
So I plan to use transcriptions from Symphony of Science, The Big Beginning, followed by Dylan Thomas' Fern Hill, and some of the poems my dad himself wrote. Perhaps I'l include something by Ezra Pound and or William Carlos Williams, some of my dad's favorite poets, if I can find appropriate selections.
I think a transcription of this would be a good ending for the service.
I found it very moving.

(3,595 posts)an example of obstacles and challenges in his life and how he approached them and did (or did not) overcome.
I recall thinking of my father and how he was orphaned at the age of 12.... Spanish Flu.... he ended up leaving school after 7th grade.
Despite that, he rose to be foreman of his department.
