Just a random post I came across earlier today. Thought it was a valid point how much closer the current Pope is to the teachings of Jesus than the other recent ones.

Even going so far as having the vatican call legalizing ssm in Ireland a "Defeat for Humanity."

I took it just as a clever way to point out that Jesus would be, in terms of current politics, a far-left socialist.

Early Christians portrayed in the Bible lived communally. "Communists," one might say.
Take that, you Prosperity Gospellers.

Liberalism. The pope has been one of the biggest opponents of issues like gay rights, reproductive rights and freedoms, and feminism.

Imagine if someone where to come to any forum and talk about liking Rand Paul and praising him on his opposition to the patriot act. While many posters would agree with the comments regarding the patriot act, they would then point out all that is wrong with politics and some would launch an attack on him.

This is what happened with your post. You praised a man (the pope) who has hurt a large portion of DU community, and who continues to promote opposition to their rights.

Further, you did so in the religion forum where believers and non-believers debate religion. The non-believers here are not going to just applaud. They are going to discuss the religious themes and point out where both the pope and Yeshua/Jesus fall short of the liberal ideal. The believers will disagree and the two will debate things...and the debates in here often get both heated and personal.

If you want to post without hearing criticism of the pope and Yeshua you will need to take it to one of the Christian-safehaven groups. Christian Liberals & Progressive People of Faith probably being the best group. Similarly, you could take it to interfaith, which (despite what its SoP and hosts says) is a believer (of any faith) and believer ally safehaven group.

This is not to say that you can't post about it here, but if you do you are going to have to deal with people who disagree and some who actively dislike the pope and some who oppose Christianity and quite possibly religion in general. I take it that is not what you are looking for.

Sorry if I offended you with my earlier reply, but I (being both a former catholic and a somewhat anti-religious nonbeliever) have some very deep criticism of both the Pope and Yeshua.

I am sure you will get more of the type of discussion you are looking for in the other groups I mentioned.

When he divests the RCC of it's wealth then come back to me.
Feed and educate the poor, don't tithe them.

Slovakia for opposing same sex marriage, in the church's name and using his image on billboards.

Sound liberal or progressive or in any way like able to you?

It got derailed because you came in here fawning over one of the biggest bigots on the planet (largest following).

That's generally in poor taste around here.

You tell me about a pope that talks a good game about the poor, but opposes condoms and other forms of family planning that can help lift families out of poverty? Your shit does not compute and neither does his.

There are both supporters and detractors of the pope in this group and both are welcome, so I hope you can take it as it is and not assume that your positive support of the pope is not appropriate or welcome here.

I am very supportive of some of the positions he has taken and agree that he exemplifies more of the things I associate with christ than many of his predecessors.

OTOH, his positions on GLBT equality, women and birth control still leave a lot to be desired.

I think he deserves both praise and criticism.

I haven't decided what I like best about him: his condemnation of the LGBT community, his misogynistic views, or his efforts to ensure the continued spread of AIDS, especially in the third world.

What a great guy.
