(111,368 posts)while the preacher carefully chooses which words in it to use in his sermons. Those words invariably instruct them on whom to hate.
I think we've all noticed this.
Reading it? No way.

You love to quote Leviticus. What do you say about 19:18?

It's just one guy upset that the right-wing Christians follow the verses he ignores, and vice-versa.

(19,288 posts)Of making a spectacle of their religiosity, in public, for all to see. They just seem like fake Christians to me. Huckabee and Santotum just don't seem very Christ like. They seem hateful and judgemental especially about the needy or downtrodden.

(49,533 posts)And liberal Christians look like fake Christians to them.
Until all religious people can get past this "they aren't true XXX" nonsense, we aren't going to make any progress.

(32,733 posts)They should pick up a Red Letter Bible. All the words of Christ are in red, so they can just skip the bull shit.

(9,116 posts)An ad hominem is an a counter-argument directed at the person making an argument rather than the argument itself. Trotsky didn't do that. He pointed out that your argument is a matter of opinion, not established fact.

(23,980 posts)The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. - Matthew 25:40
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God. - Matthew 19:24
I could go on, but those verses make it pretty tough both for those who try to espouse a right-wing view of the Bible and for those who want us to doubt that religion can do any good.
trotsky
(49,533 posts)"If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters--yes, even their own life--such a person cannot be my disciple." - Luke 14:26
"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." - Matthew 10:34
"But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them--bring them here and kill them in front of me.'" - Luke 19:27
Oh wait, you have neat little explanations for why those verses don't mean what they appear to mean, don't you? JUST LIKE THEY DO.

(49,533 posts)What's to keep them from looking at your quotes and saying "context is a good thing" back to you? I notice how you didn't actually *explain* any of those bible quotes. Why is that?
Religion does bad things, too. I know it's hard for some people to accept that, but religion does bad things!

(23,980 posts)I don't explain Bible quotes to anti-religious people for the same reason I don't explain policy to the tea party: I have better things to do with my precious time.
Over the years I've seen people make many hyperbolic claims about the bad things supposedly done by religion. I've never seen any actual proof of religion's supposed role in the same - just empty rhetoric.
