WLOS BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. -- The Democratic Party passed a resolution calling for secular functions, meaning non-religious, in two districts over the weekend.
The resolution reads, "Whereas, we, the Democratic Party, strive, and wish to be recognized for inclusiveness, diversity, and respect for all religious beliefs and non beliefs; and whereas, invocations or prayers at democratic functions appealing to a specific religion or deity may be divisive to those who have different beliefs or non beliefs; now, therefore, be it resolved, that Democratic Party functions are non-religious in content."
News 13 asked the question: Does this resolution exclude prayer at Democratic Party events?
"No, this is specifically written that it does not eliminate prayer. Prayer is welcome at our meetings," Kathy Sinclair, the chair of the Buncombe County Democratic Party, said.
The Buncombe County Democratic Party chair added that this resolution doesn't change functions, saying it's meant to be inclusive.
The resolution passed at Saturday's conventions in District 10 and 11. It will now go the North Carolina Democratic State Convention in June.
