Florida Catholic bishop: ‘It is religion, including our own,’ that targets LGBT people

Ah yet another anti-theist bigot bad mouthing religion!

Second, sadly it is religion, including our own, that targets, mostly verbally, and often breeds contempt for gays, lesbians and transgender people. Attacks today on LGBT men and women often plant the seed of contempt, then hatred, which can ultimately lead to violence.

Robert Lynch is the bishop of St. Petersburg.

Those women and men who were mowed down Sunday were all made in the image and likeness of God. We teach that. We should believe that. We must stand for that.

Brave and intelligent religious people acknowledging the hatred in their own holy texts and religious traditions, not ignoring or dismissing them, or attacking people who want to talk about it.

have emphasized the teachings of Islam that condemn homosexuality. This bishop is a believer I can respect, one who is willing to acknowledge the hard truth of his religion and not just sweep the disgusting filth under the rug and pretend it doesn't exist.

I say it is time to dismiss bishops from the Episcopal Church who are not LGBT inclusive.

The Most Reverend Bishop of St. Petersburg is on the right track, that's for goddamned sure. Religious authorities need to realize that relentlessly hammering away at the "sin" of homosexuality dehumanizes and breeds contempt for gay people. If you care one bit about the well-being of your fellow man, you'll stow that shit in the Big Box of Forgotten Sins, next to usury, gambling, and eating meat on Fridays.

It's refreshing to hear an American Bishop take such a stand, and I hope he's willing to pursue the matter with his peers.

Take another look at what was written and think about how it was intended. Perhaps do the Christian thing and apologize for your nasty attack.

My post was the exact quote from the Bishop and the exact headline from the wapo article.

I understand how that could be viewed as a "misstatement", in hands over ears and eyes but mouth babbling land

And good for the Bishop for stating the obvious.
