Another push for religious freedom legislation

COLUMBUS, Ga. – A proponent of the religious freedom legislation that Georgia Governor Nathan Deal vetoed earlier this year is not giving up. The bill would have given faith-based organizations the option to deny services and jobs to those in the LGBT community.

Senator Josh McKoon is re-tooling a bill for a religious freedom law in Georgia. He says his main goal with the bill is to provide Georgians the same level of religious protection throughout all levels of government. McKoons says he wants claims concerning people’s free exercise right to be treated the same in local, state, and federal courts.

“If you’re an inmate in a federal prison, you get one level of religious freedom protection, but if you’re Joe citizen suing your city council or the state government you get a much lower level of protection. That’s the issue I’m trying to fix,” McKoon explained.

David Smith with Colgay Pride does not support McKoon’s efforts and says this bill would be a step back for Georgia.

I'm beginning to think these republican state legislatures are a bigger problem than Congress.

They're receding into these state enclaves to push their agenda, like wood-boring insects.

And just like those wood-boring insects, they are weakening democratic structures from within.
