Why parts of the Uniting Church are abandoning its logo

THE Uniting Church and its associated organisations are in talks over how to handle their PR problem after reports it was moving to hide mentions of Christ and Christian symbolism in its promotional material.

The Uniting logo features a ‘crucifix’ symbol in its ‘t’, the organisation’s executive director has claimed.

The Uniting Church’s logo, features the ‘cross of Jesus Christ’ to symbolise that people are ‘bound to Christ and each other’.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the church’s services and advocacy arm, Uniting, had decided to do away with “overt” faith-based language and images of the cross in its logo.

The admission came in response to a critical letter from a member of the church, who had noticed an advertisement placed by Uniting hadn’t included explicit mention of the Uniting Church, the word church at all, or the denomination’s recognisable symbol which features the cross.

Uniting Church Australia President Stuart McMillan, in a response, said

“Uniting, the largest provider of social services in NSW and the ACT, changed its brand name last year.

“This decision was taken to ensure that awareness of our services reaches more of the vulnerable and disadvantaged people we seek to serve.

“Preparation for moves towards the National Disability Insurance Scheme and the shift to self-managed care were important considerations in this decision.

Other church agencies are considering adopting the Uniting brand.”
