Will atheist Rev. Gretta Vosper obtain 'no-fault' divorce from church?

Some speculate Rev. Gretta Vosper's choice to lead a largely atheist organization could trigger a United Church clause that allows her to avoid a "disciplinary" hearing and simply go on a "discontinued" clergy list.

Atheist Rev. Gretta Vosper has joined the board of a “non-religious” organization called Oasis, which provides a home for atheists, agnostics and others.

Could this provide the combative clergywoman with a face-saving exit from the United Church of Canada, where a key committee declared last year she is “not suitable to continue in ordained ministry because she does not believe in God, Jesus Christ or the Holy Spirit.”

The church sub-executive acknowledges the high-profile case of Vosper — who is championed often by journalists in the secular media, especially in Toronto — has caused “division” and “vitriol” on many fronts.

United Church Rev. David Shearman is now among those speculating that Vosper’s decision to become a Canadian leader of Oasis could trigger a denominational clause that allows her to avoid another “disciplinary” hearing and simply go on a clergy “discontinued” list.
