http://kdvr.com/2017/09/26/honors-student-accuses-school-of-sabotaging-grades-and-scholarship-applications-over-religion/Fisk graduated from Delta High School in 2016. She is accusing her teachers of sabotaging her grades, and chances for college admission and scholarships because of her religious beliefs.
...
Fisk said before the article, she had earned a 98 percent in her student government class but was dropped to a 70 percent because of her 'questioning of authority, particularly religious authority."
According to the lawsuit, her teachers told Ms. Fisk that she was being highly disrespectful and that if she wanted her grades to go up, she should shut up and fake it until she makes it.
Ms. Fisk opposed the school's right-wing religious agenda and evidently paid a price. Her lawyer says:
Freedom of religion is not only freedom of religion, its freedom to disagree with religion, to not have a religion, Springer said. I will certainly fight to protect everybodys religious views and their right to practice religion but I think when you seek to impose your religious views on others, thats dangerous.

(4,066 posts)They justify any, ANY, behavior as being in service to their god. So their god forgives them for lying, cheating, stealing, etc. when it is to further their god's word. Society's laws, morals and ethics are irrelevant to them because of their god.
Yes, I use lower-case god intentionally. It's not sloppy spelling.

(16,646 posts)I'm basically a nerd. I love math. I do it everyday for work. I find it rewarding. By that what I mean is I calculate things. Of course, it is a means to an end. But the point is that the reason I, and many of may coworkers, love doing "math" for a living is that when there is an argument, we can all calculate things and compare our work. It doesn't necessarily mean it "solves" anything because any calculation can be based upon approximations, and assumptions, as well as different theories that aren't necessarily 100% consistent. So why is that enjoyable? Because the one thing I CAN'T do is lie. I have to "show my work". There is no "I'm right because I'm the boss", or "I know something you don't", or "because I can" kind of situation. If I try to lie/fudge/spin/justify my conclusions based upon that, the consequence will be abject rejection and ridicule. Look, it's fine to disagree, as long as you have a basis for disagreeing.
But get outside of my world and suddenly lying is a basis for a point of view, even when the lie (falsehood, mistake, whatever) is exposed. In my world, to assert a position only to be shown that it is baseless, or based upon flaw logic/math/theories is a sure fire way to not only "lose" the argument, but to establish ones self as incompetent. In so much of the world arguments start with phrases like "I'm not scientist but....". I get so tired of "lies, damn lies, and statistics..." kind of arguments. Look if you can't back up what you say, shut up. And I don't just mean math. Does history support your assertion? Is there a relevant experience that isn't anecdotal that you can reference? It happens around here far too often, but I'm a little more accommodating because this is a general "discussion" forum where people are expected to "work out" their arguments before having to necessarily defend or support them. There is a certain allowance for arguments that start with "I don't know but it seems like...". But when you are a in a position of authority, one must be fairly certain of their positions prior to exercising that authority to otherwise punish or deliver consequences.

(82 posts)I hope they bankrupt the school district and fire those involved. These folks who call themselves Christians are sick, evil people. Certainly, they are not Christian in any sense of the word. If I was a university admissions person and saw this, I would immediately give her a place and a free ride. He'll, if I was wealthy I would pay. But, I'm not.

Religion is a sickness. And it can be easily abused by slick authoritarians. It is similar to how ISIS (and frankly many dogmatic mosques around the world) re-interprets the Koran and spreads this to their worshipers.
I realize that for many, even on the left, their "faith" is a positive thing for them in a personal and social way. But things like drinking alcohol can also be something good as well, to open up more with others, to not be so shy, to help have a great time with friends and family, the art of wine making and tasting, etc...But of course it is also very destructive to a lot of people. The difference is that not every person that uses alcohol is a raging alcoholic. But every born again Christian is a raging God addict.

(14,169 posts)I'm talking about voters. Citizens. The whole "prosperity Christianity" was started in the US. Where now instead of it being harder for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God than for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle, now its all about the richer you are, the more God likes you, which conversely means that the poorer you are the more you are with the devil and so should be ignored and called lazy and worse.
The largest support group for Trump that continues to have high numbers of support is the Christian evangelical community. When I was growing up, in a Christian home, I could get my mouth washed out with soap for saying the word "damn". Now the person that unabashedly and unrepentingly brags he can grab a woman by the p**** just because he is a big hollywood star is adored and worshiped by them just after their new version of Jesus.
