Religion
Related: About this forumI dislike proselytizing in general, but particularly
with regard to religious beliefs. Like most people in this country, I'm familiar with our dominant religion and its beliefs. I don't have those beliefs.
Many religions are not evangelical in nature. I've never had a Hindu, Sikh, Jew or Buddhist tell me that I should follow their faith. Only Christians have ever done that.
Since I don't like it when people try to convert me, I don't try to convince people to become atheists, either. Frankly, I don't think that's even possible. I don't care really.
I find religions interesting. So, I'm always interested in discussing them. But I have no interest in whether someone believes or not. That's a personal thing, really.
Just musing...

(779 posts)I actually enjoy our discussions. I've thought about metaphysics quite a bit over the years, and do not share the belief of any organized religion (that I know of). Most people don't initiate these discussions, and neither do I, usually. So when he proselytizes, he gets my opinion too. Though I am pretty chill about it. I don't feel it's important for people to believe as I do. And if someone's religion helps them get through the day, then maybe it's good for them. (As long as they don't use their religion to justify hassling me or others.)

(32,706 posts)My Minor was Anthropology. Anthropology of Religion was one of the most interesting classes I took. Most colleges let old farts monitor classes.
One aspect to think about is whether a religion is adaptive to its environmental setting. Take dietary restrictions, eating pork, raising swine would be terrible for the Middle East as well as the parasites.
Study of religions seems a lot more interesting than practicing it.

(5,210 posts)The Eastern religions for the most part recognize that when the Soul has matured enough it will naturally gravitate toward the more evolved religions. No need to proselytize -- huge waste of time and energy.

(7,886 posts)but many consider atheists (or other non-christian religions) just stating that they exist as proselytising.

(8,909 posts)originates from their feeling of supremacy. We see it every day, they are correct and true and everyone else is wrong, even though they can't claim a majority of the world population. Many are surprised by that fact when brought to their attention. Of course being a majority has no bearing on validity but it is a thorn in their side.
