The 2 leaders of the fundamentalist takeover of the SoBaptConvention in big trouble
* Paul Pressler, a former TX judge, has been accused by several men that he sexually molested them when they were teens in his church groups. There are many recent articles stating that his actions were an open secret.
* Paige Patterson, president of the SBC's Soutwestern Seminary, is under fire for his appalling statements that abused wives should stay, submit, and pray for their husbands. These comments have been discussed for some time by women in the SBC. They have only recently reached a national audience. Notknown nationally is Patterson's refusal to report to police the clams of several woman that an up and coming preacher (?Daryl Gillard) was molesting them. Paige refused to fire the preacher and sent him to a new church post without informing that congregation of the charges. The man continued to abuse women until finally someone reported him to the police. (Victims in SBC and similar churces are told NOT to report to the police. They are told the matter must be handled in house.) He fired one of the best, if not THE best, Hebrew scholar in the SBC because she was a woman. In his Bible interpretation, women are NOT permitted to teach men. Even more 'damning' in his view, she interpreted Bible passages for herself. In Paige's view, women are to take men's view of the Bible, not read it on their own. Finally, you will not believe this! Paige, his wife, Paul, and his wife have each been 'immortalized' for their role in the SBC takeover by having their stained glass portraits placed in the windows of the chapel at Southwestern Seminary. 2. These two guys orchestrated the fundamentalist take over of the SBC.
I would like to think that this will bring them down but I'm skeptical. The fundamentalists are the to the SBC what the Trumpsters are to the country. The fundamentalists will not look past the "necessity" of protecting the leaders.

7. True, repenting isn't required as child rape isn't a sin in the bible
Neither is hindering prosecution of child rapists. So certainly no biblical reason Pressler can't be square with the holy zombie on this one.
Patterson doesn't have to repent either because he's just repeating what the bible says. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians+5%3A22-23&version=NIV
A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. Of course, this is all just metaphorical and we can't take any of this literally, right? ![]() |

9. Now you will be told that was Paul, not Jesus.
Never mind that many Protestant churches teach Paul more than Jesus, nor that selective reading of scripture is the right way to deal with issues.
Someone will tell you those things, I'm sure. |

10. So do Catholic ones
If you still have your foreskin and/or you enjoy ham on Easter, you can thank Paul, not Jesus.

11. Yes. Paul, the Roman, was the perfect writer of letters to be included
in the Biblical Canon. He Romanized and gentilized Christianity, leading to its massive success in much of the world. Without Paul, early Christianity would likely have withered and died after a few centuries.
Thanks for the reminder. |

12. Someone had to bring funds into the church for it to grow
Paul's skill was in bringing in funds from the rich Romans and Greeks, but in order to do so he had to find a loophole in the circumcision requirement. Few adults were going to risk death from infection or important bits falling off after such a procedure. So Paul just pretended the holy poltergeist whispered in his ear and told him He didn't care about foreskins anymore. Problem solved. The best part is Christians today get to eat ham while still self-righteously claiming homosexuality is a sin (even though the Talmud didn't say so). Thanks, Paul!

6. In my experience, everyone who obsesses in public about other people's sexuality...
...has got a shit-ton of pervy skeletons in their own closet.
I don't think there are any exceptions to that. |

8. Never underestimate the Christian right's capacity for forgiveness...
...when it's their people on the bench.
